Reading the gossip today that the Olsen girls didn’t want to front their own fashion line, The Row, surprised us so much because unlike many other celebrities who tack their name onto a tasteless brand of horrible clothes for a bit of extra cash (AHEM, Katie Price), the Olsens have a genuine talent that they should be proud of. Looking back at the work that the two tiny beauties have produced since The Row’s debut, it’s clear to me that Ashley and Mary-Kate were actually meant to be fashion designers all along.
The girls have really hit their stride with their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, which took inspiration from children’s tales such as The Fantastic Mr Fox and mixed it up with a good deal of Bianca Jagger 70s glamour for a decadent, playful feel. Extravagant shapes in rich furs combined with very sharp, clean lines and crisp autumnal colours actually made it one of the more interesting takes on 70s style for this season.
Like Victoria Beckham before them, the Olsens will have a little further to go before they are considered to be “proper” fashion designers and not just famous, rich girls that are trying their hand at something new. But like Victoria, the Olsen twins have a genuine love for clothes that flatter the feminine form – it must have been all that Chanel that they got to wear when they wear eleven – and know how to make a good idea great.
